Who Speaks for the City? By Arthur Rorris, Secretary, South Coast Labour Council

Posted by reformwcc on March 19, 2008

Faced with the sensational ICAC revelations of corruption at Wollongong City Council, our community expected the NSW Government to take action to restore confidence and transparency in local government and to axe political donations from developers. Donations that may have compromised politicians.

The state government, however, looks to have taken a different view. The only thing they were prepared to immediately axe was democratic government in Wollongong till the year 2012. This is a pretty slick effort, even for politicians.

The plot goes something like this: ICAC investigates several ALP councillors, finds systemic corruption at Wollongong City Council and recommends its dismissal. The State Labor Government takes the advice of ICAC and sacks the Council. It then proceeds to do something that ICAC didn’t recommend, that is, to deny the citizens of Wollongong fresh elections required to elect a new leadership of our city.

The result is that elements of the same ALP machine that endorsed and promoted the four councillors of interest to ICAC have now appointed three administrators to clean out the corruption. Excuse me?

So rather than take responsibility for the corruption  and address the systemic problems in its own backyard, the State Government has opted instead to take out democratic Government in Wollongong and centralize even more power in the hands of fewer people hand picked by themselves.
