Welcome to spring, 2008.
The WAC rally rightly calls for elections by March 2009 to restore democracy by way of elected Councillors.
Hope for the best by all means.
But plan for the worst.
As the present State government seems unlikely to move in the direction of extra elections, one main question then becomes:
“What alternative means need to be created for our communities to have a real say in the workings of Council’s decision-making process during the absence of elected Councillors?”
Ward/Precinct Committees (as committees of Councils with real resources) are one realistic alternative.
The second question is of equal importance:
“How can we insist that these alternative means are put in place this year, in order to see use through to the next WCC elections in 2012 (or whenever)?”
What strategies and tactics can we use to obtain this key objective?
