A Wollongong neighbourhood forum is going global on social networking website Facebook to involve younger, tech-savvy residents in community issues.
Neighbourhood Forum Seven – which represents residents from Berkeley to Port Kembla and south to Windang – has become the first of the city’s eight forums to join Facebook.
Co-convener Belinda Carter hasn’t ruled out also launching the group on Twitter if it builds up a Facebook following.
“Facebook is such a huge networking tool,” the Windang mum said.
“You can basically stand in people’s lounge rooms and we can reach out to some younger people.”
Ms Carter said the forum was a way to keep in contact with people who might be interested in community issues but couldn’t make it to the monthly meetings.
“We only have 10 meetings a year, and it is so long between meetings that we thought this was a way to get a lot happening in-between and keep the ideas flowing.”
Facebook has already been used to promote a meeting in Windang to discuss ideas for the Lake Illawarra foreshore along Judbooley Parade.
