John Dorahy is expected to gain Liberal Party preselection this weekend to run for Wollongong lord mayor.

Although a NSW Liberal Party spokesman would not confirm or deny Mr Dorahy’s selection, the Mercury understands he will be chosen.”

Mention in story of Liberal party and ALP to each meet this weekend for selection of WCC candidates.

See also update re changes to Community Voice Councillor candidates. They too will meet this weekend to select their Lord Mayor candidate

No action from WCC regarding lack of NF2 – and now NF3.

Posted by reformwcc on July 28, 2011

Neighbourhood Forum 2 recently folded and advised WCC of this. With Alice Cartan standing down as Convenor of NF3 to contest the Council election there is also no NF for that area as well.

This means there is no NF for an area which covers Clifton, Coalcliff, Coledale, Maddens Plains, Scarborough, Wombarra, Austinmer, Bulli, Thirroul and Woonona. This will remain the case for at least some months to come.

To me this points to serious shortcomings in the present Council-community consultation process. We require properly constituted and properly resourced Precinct Committees (as committees of Council) to carry conduct important community business.

Here is the WCC reply to my message asking what action WCC would be taking to ensure important community business could continue to be done:

Dear Bruce

Neighbourhood Forums

I am writing in response to your letter raising concerns over the closure of the Neighbourhood Forum Two group who have until recently met at Coledale.

It is indeed regrettable that this group is no longer meeting. My understanding is that numbers had declined and that members were not willing to stand as Convenor. As an independent community group this is their decision to make but a sad one as they had operated for a long time and we enjoyed consulting with them.

At this stage we will not be looking to intervene to establish a new group in area two. The Wollongong 2011-14 Management Plan lists a review of Council’s Community Consultation Policy as a key project for 2011-12. We adopted a revised Policy in 2010 with a review date of 2012 and it was always our intention to review that Policy with the newly elected Council. As you know the policy sets out a number of key activities and engagement methods used by Council. We have always been very clear that the Neighbourhood Forums are one of many ways we engage with the community.

Council has consulted the community at forum meetings on a number of topics including Dogs on Beaches, and Management Plans as well as running kiosks at events, drop in information sessions and online surveys on the same topics. Neighbourhood Forums are a valuable way we work with the community but in the absence of Neighbourhood Forum Two there are many other ways the community can contribute. Should a group of residents seek to reform the Neighbourhood Forum Council staff will support it as per the current policy.

Should the Neighbourhood Forum remain dormant I would encourage yourself and all other interested community members to engage with Council through our other engagement activities, our customer service centre, phone, letter or email. You are also welcome to attend the Neighbourhood Forum at Helensburgh. The Thirroul Forum is not currently meeting but has not folded, if a member will come forward to stand for election as Convenor then their meetings will resume.

Please contact me if you would like more information.

Climate Change – Key questions for all WCC Council candidates

Posted by reformwcc on July 27, 2011

A television program on the ABC last night said that all the carbon in the universe originates in the process of collapse of a dying star. That may well be true, but the main concern in this part of the unfolding story on life on earth points to the role of Wollongong as Carbon Central.

The Illawarra region is one of the areas which will suffer greatly from climate change from sea level rise, flooding and increased bush fire risks.

The Climate Commission has stressed that decisions made in the next decade “… will determine the severity of climate change our children and grandchildren experience” (see quote below)

The new Wollongong City Council Councillors will be in office for until September 2016.

We must ask all candidates for Lord Mayor and Council to provide a very clear statement on where they stand on climate change, what are their climate change policies and what they intend to do to take real and effective measures at the local government level to minimise the impacts of climate change.

See video footage from UOW students for some good coverage from the release of the The Critical Decade: Illawarra/NSW South Coast Impacts report.

“Professor Will Steffen, Climate Commissioner and co-author of the report, says the evidence for climate change is overwhelmingly clear.

“This report shows that the NSW South Coast and the Illawarra region are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate,” he said.

The Current’s Tamara Gasser caught up with Professor Steffen following the forum.”

Download the Illawarra South Coast Climate Change impacts report from

http://climatecommission.gov.au/topics/illawarransw-south-coast-climate-change-impacts/

The following points highlight the key messages arising from the accompanying report The Critical Decade:

1. There is no doubt that the climate is changing. The evidence is overwhelming and clear.
2. We are already seeing the social, economic and environmental impacts of a changing climate.
3. It is beyond reasonable doubt that human activities – the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation – are triggering the changes we are witnessing in the global climate.
4. This is the critical decade. Decisions we make from now to 2020 will determine the severity of climate change our children and grandchildren experience.

Council – no reply to lack of NFs

Posted by reformwcc on July 21, 2011

Dear Mr Farmer

It is well over ten working days since my original message and i have not received a reply to the matter i raised regarding the lack of a Neighbourhood Forum 2.

I understand that Neighbourhood Forum 3 is now also no longer functional.

This means that important community council business (such as the Headland Hotel plan) cannot be properly considered by our local communities.

Could you take serious action to ensure that our communities are not denied the opportunity to participate in these major matters and put some interim measure in place until the new Council is elected and had a chance to meet.

Yours truly

Dear Mr Farmer

The Neighbourhood Forum in my area (NF2) recently ceased to operate. Council’s website says:

“Neighbourhood Forum 2 includes the following suburbs: Clifton, Coalcliff, Coledale, Maddens Plains, Scarborough and Wombarra”

Given the very important role Wollongong City Council has placed on Neighbourhood Forums in its Management Plans (which include providing a Council-community conduit for regular business and a special role in forthcoming consultations regarding the Community Strategic Plan), could you advise me (and other residents of our area) what effective actions Council is presently taking to remedy this lack of a Neighbourhood Forum for the part of the city covered by the former NF2?
